Cycling in Paris in Autumn: Our tips for a great ride

Paris by bike? Absolutely — even in autumn.

With cooler temperatures and the possibility of rain, October simply requires a little more planning. But it can also be a wonderful time to explore Paris by bike, especially as autumn colours begin to appear in the city’s gardens and along the Seine.

Here are our tips for enjoying a bike ride around Paris this autumn.

1. Choose the right time of day

For a more enjoyable ride, try to choose times when traffic is lighter.

Morning or early afternoon also gives you more natural daylight, which becomes increasingly limited as October progresses.

2. Follow the Seine

For your first ride, the Seine is a great place to start.

You can combine cycling with sightseeing and pass close to some of Paris’s most iconic landmarks and neighbourhoods.

And don’t forget to stop along the way: for a coffee, a photo, a bakery break or simply a few minutes by the river.

3. Make use of cycle lanes

Paris has an extensive cycling network, but some streets are more comfortable to cycle through than others.

Before setting off, plan your route and use cycle lanes and dedicated cycling paths whenever possible.

This allows you to enjoy the city without constantly having to focus on traffic.

4. Dress for the weather

October weather can change quickly.

A lightweight waterproof jacket, comfortable shoes and several layers are good essentials.

An umbrella is usually not very practical on a bike, so a waterproof jacket is a better option.

5. Don’t try to see everything

A common mistake is trying to cross Paris as quickly as possible to see as many landmarks as you can.

The beauty of cycling is that you can stop easily.

Choose a neighbourhood or a route and leave yourself enough time to explore the surrounding streets.

6. Stop at a café

A bike ride can easily become a full day out.

Plan a café break to warm up, enjoy a coffee or simply watch Parisian life go by.

It’s also a good opportunity to take a break before getting back on your bike.

7. Be careful on cobblestones and wet roads

Some Parisian neighbourhoods have cobbled streets that can become slippery when wet.

After rainfall, slow down and take extra care when turning or approaching intersections.

8. Consider an electric bike

If you’re not used to cycling in a city, an electric bike can be a great option.

It allows you to cover more distance without turning your day into a workout.

It’s particularly useful if you want to explore several areas of Paris in one day.

9. Combine cycling with public transport

You don’t have to spend your entire day on a bike.

You can start your ride in one neighbourhood, take the metro to another part of the city and continue cycling later.

The goal is to enjoy Paris, not to set a distance record.

10. Always have a Plan B

Finally, check the weather before setting off.

If heavy rain is expected, have an alternative ready: a museum, exhibition, café, gallery or covered passage.

And if a short shower catches you during your ride, simply take a break and continue once the weather improves.

Discover Paris at your own pace

Cycling lets you experience Paris differently: faster than walking, while still giving you the freedom to stop whenever you want.

In autumn, all you really need is the right route, suitable clothing and a little flexibility.

Your B’Your Home apartment can be the perfect starting point for exploring Paris at your own pace, by bike or on foot.
