The best Autumn walks in Paris

Paris is particularly enjoyable to explore on foot in autumn. Temperatures are generally more comfortable than in summer, the city’s gardens begin to take on their seasonal colours and the light changes throughout the day.

Whether you’re visiting for a weekend or a few days, here are five walks to add to your Paris itinerary.

1. From the Tuileries Garden to the Seine

Start your walk in the Tuileries Garden, between the Louvre and Place de la Concorde.

Take your time walking through the gardens before heading towards the Seine. From there, continue towards Pont Alexandre III or, in the opposite direction, towards Île de la Cité.

It’s an easy route to adapt depending on how much time you have, with plenty of places to stop along the way.

Don’t miss: the views of the Louvre, the Seine and the autumn gardens.

2. From Saint-Germain-des-Prés to the Luxembourg Gardens

Start around Saint-Germain-des-Prés and take some time to explore its streets, bookshops and cafés.

Then make your way towards the Luxembourg Gardens, particularly beautiful when the trees begin to turn golden.

You can finish your walk around the Odéon area with lunch or a coffee.

Don’t miss: the small streets around Saint-Germain and the Luxembourg Gardens’ central pond.

3. Le Marais to Place des Vosges

Le Marais is perfect for a walk without a strict itinerary.

Start around Hôtel de Ville, then head towards Rue des Rosiers, explore the surrounding streets and eventually reach Place des Vosges.

With historic mansions, boutiques, galleries and cafés, this walk offers a very different side of Paris from the city’s major tourist routes.

Don’t miss: Place des Vosges and the charming streets around the neighbourhood.

4. Discover Montmartre through its quieter streets

Montmartre is best explored slowly.

Start near Place des Abbesses and gradually make your way towards Sacré-Cœur through some of the neighbourhood’s quieter streets.

After enjoying the views from the top of the hill, slowly make your way back down towards Pigalle.

Don’t miss: the streets around Abbesses, Place du Tertre and the view from Sacré-Cœur.

Our tip: wear comfortable shoes. Montmartre comes with plenty of stairs and slopes.

5. Along the Canal Saint-Martin to Bassin de la Villette

For a more local experience, head towards Canal Saint-Martin.

Start near République and follow the canal north. Stop at a café, watch the locks in action and continue towards Bassin de la Villette.

It’s a particularly pleasant way to discover a more residential and less monumental side of Paris.

Don’t miss: the footbridges, canal locks and small local spots along the water.

A Paris walk doesn’t always need a destination

One of the pleasures of Paris in autumn is simply taking your time.

You don’t need to visit a landmark every hour. Choose a neighbourhood, walk, stop for coffee, browse a shop and let yourself discover something unexpected.

And if the weather changes, simply adapt your plans. A museum, bookshop or covered passage is never too far away.
